What we’re seeing at Dublin Dance Festival

Now that we’ve had a little rest after RIOT, we’re looking forward to catching some of the rest of the Dublin Dance Festival programme, curated by top buzzer and friend of the company Benjamin Perchet. Here’s a taste of what the Popbaby crew will be seeing over the next ten days.

Killer new work from Irish dancers and companies…

We can’t wait to check out SESSION, a new collaboration between Irish traditional dancer Colin Dunne and internationally renowned choreographer and dancer Sidi-Larbi Cherkaoui on the Abbey stage. The culmination of a three-year process, this is the piece’s Irish premiere so nab a ticket if you can!

Get a glimpse of some great dance works in development at First Looks, featuring new work from Popbaby collaborator Deirdre Griffin, as well as CoisCéim’s choreographer extraordinaire David Bolger, among others.

Irish Modern Dance Theatre ‘s new piece Inventions is another hot ticket – with a  cast of performers including 84-year-old dance legend Velda Satterfeld and firecracker Oona Doherty, this is not to be missed.

And if you missed it Liv O’Donoghue’s AFTER at Dublin Fringe Festival, you have another chance to catch it now at Mermaid Arts Centre and Draíocht Blanchardstown.

International acts to look out for…

We’re very excited to see Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker’s iconic pieces Rosas danst Rosas – a breakthrough postmodern piece that has influenced tons of artists (including Beyoncé!) since it was first staged in 1983. It looks right up our street.

We’re also dying to catch the Irish premiere of Phoenix by Eric Minh Cuong Castaing – a piece for drones and dancers, exploring both ideas of childhood play and of modern warfare. We’re super excited to see how this new technology can be incorporated into live performance.
